Administrative Reorganization in July

Isabel Hernandez was appointed as the College Director of Learning Resources and will supervise Learning Resources at the InterAmerican Campus.

The MDC Learning Resource areas were reorganized with the appointment of a Campus Director to supervise both the campus library and computer courtyard.

Here are the appointments for the new Campus Directors for Learning Resources:

• Erick Dominicis, Kendall Campus
• Rolando Garcia, Wolfson Campus
• Elisa Abella, Medical Campus

Our Campus Director for Learning Resources, Estrella Iglesias, also has supervision over the Meek Center and MDC-West. She has been actively working to increase student instruction and library usage as well as focusing our efforts here at the North Campus Library on weeding the collection.

The North Campus Library offers these and many more electronic databases for student use. These can be accessed from any Internet computer, even off-campus. All you need is your student ID number; the PIN is the last four digits of that number. Make sure "Miami Dade College" appears in the drop down menu. Spotlight Web Resource: Florida Memory Project

The Florida Memory Project is an invaluable resource to anyone who is interested in researching or learning more about Florida's past.

This comprehensive web site is choc full of Sunshine State information, including many primary sources. It boasts an online classroom, Florida history highlights, online document and music collections, an interactive exhibit tour, and an exhaustive collection of historic Florida photographs from the state archives.

The Florida Memory Project was voted one of the 2008 101 Best Web Sites by Family Tree Magazine and is one of the Recommended Web Sites selected by our very own North Campus librarians.

The Miami International Book Fair is celebrating its 25th year this season!

Hosted by Miami Dade College, the Book Fair will be held from November 9th through the 16th, closing with the popular Street Fair from November 14th through the 16th.

Maybe you noticed us at the Job Fair earlier this semester; you may have checked out some books about careers or resumes. Or maybe you were at the Caribbean Festival recently, and found some of our books on the islands interesting enough to take home.

North Campus Library has some new databases that are worth taking a look at. Here are just a few, with descriptions from the vendors:

American Song (Alexander Street Press) - a history database that contains 50,000 tracks and allows people to hear and feel the music from America's past. The database will include songs by and about American Indians, miners, immigrants, slaves, children, pioneers, and cowboys. Included in the database are the songs of Civil Rights, political campaigns, Prohibition, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, anti-war protests and more.

Tests In Print (Ebsco) - a comprehensive bibliography to all known commercially available tests that are currently in print in the English language. TIP provides vital information to users including test purpose, test publisher, in-print status, price, test acronym, intended test population, administration times, publication date(s), and test author(s).

World History Collection (Ebsco) - offers a global look at history with content from Africa, Asia, North and South America, Europe and the Middle East. World History Collection contains cover-to-cover full text for more than 130 titles, including many peer-reviewed journals. Full text dates as far back as 1964.

MDC Libraries Lead the Way with Ask a Librarian

The Miami Dade College News and Events newsletter reported in a recent article that MDC received the second highest rating for Ask a Librarian library usage among more than 45 academic institutions in the state of Florida. A study by Ask a Librarian found that almost 800 MDC students use the service.

Ask a Librarian is a free service that allows students to interact with a librarian online via chat or email to help answer reference and research questions. The service is available 24/7 through email and during specific hours through chat, and can be accessed through the North Campus Library's web page or here. Give it a try the next time you have a research assignment due!

December's Featured Reference Work

'Tis the season for gathering and eating. Read all about it in the Encyclopedia of Food and Culture by Solomon Katz.

From the CHOICE Review:

...This source (according to the introduction) is "an authoritative survey of the history, production, preparation, science and culture of food from prehistory to the present day." It supplies 725 articles by more than 300 contributors, ranging from anthropologists, food critics, and folklorists to historians and archaeologists. The table of contents is organized alphabetically by 27 topics that include staple foods, food consumption, regions and culture, diet, religion, feasts and festivals, and biographies. Each includes subtopics such as apples, snacks, Cajun cooking, weddings, dietary guidelines, food in the Bible, and Clarence Birdseye. The "Systematic Outline of Contents" again lists the 27 topics. Article lengths range from brief descriptions of a topic to essays several pages long. Most entries have bibliographies, which may be as long as a page; most have see also references. There are 200 maps, 800 black-and-white photographs, and in each volume, an eight-page color photo spread. Throughout the volumes are sidebars, time lines, tables, menus, and recipes. One can find, e.g., the importance of cassava, a recipe for muggety pie, the relationship of food to prehistoric societies, a list of popular snacks with their origin, and how to eat the foul smelling durian. An extensive index may be more useful than the table of contents to locate particular foods or cultures. Well researched and well written. Summing Up: Essential.

Read up-to-date articles and news, along with much more, by accessing the American History database, offered through ABC-CLIO. This colorful, interactive database will bring history to life to its users.

The database features timely, topical information in columns such as "Living History" and "Spotlight On...". Current articles include Coming Home: Veterans in American Society, and Removal Era: Indians Make Way for Expansion, delineating "one of the most controversial and troubling periods of American history."

Our current database spotlight is on the Testing & Education Reference Center. This database can be an invaluable tool for prospective college students and job seekers. Features include a resume builder with cover letter samples and tips, as well as assistance in identifying scholarships, colleges, graduate schools, and specialty programs and careers. Testing & Education Reference Center helps prepare students for specialized tests for college, graduate school, the military or trade school. It includes preparatory tests from the GED (General Educational Development) to the GRE (Graduate Record Examination General Test). Testing & Education Reference Center provides a variety of search options to help you find all the information you need on private high schools, distance education, two-year programs, undergraduate and graduate programs and executive education programs. Maintain the spirit of independence all month long by having a look at this month's featured reference work, The Bill of Rights, edited by Thomas T. Lewis. From the summary:

This two-volume set provides an encyclopedic guide to the Bill of Rights portion of the U.S. Constitution, i.e. those amendments that are important because of having been framed to protect rights and liberties from government abuses. Intended for high school and college students and other nonspecialist readers, the essays comprise a survey of the history and significance of the Bill of Rights within the broader contexts of the principles of constitutional law and U.S. legal history; individual articles on each of the first ten amendments, arranged in numerical order; 81 discussions (ranging from one to about 5 pages) of specific related issues such as censorship, civil rights and liberties, due process, the freedom of religion, the right to counsel, Miranda rights, and others; and 281 brief articles on the individual court cases through which the rights have been defined and extended.

According to the Center for Digital Education and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), who conducted the survey, MDC ranked sixth out of almost 200 community colleges across the nation. The survey looked at how these colleges are using technology in the services they offer their students, faculty, and staff. New Printing Procedures

The North Campus Library's new printing and photocopying procedures are now fully operational! Students can now add cash value to their account at any Add Value Station for unlimited printing or photocopying. These machines accept $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills to apply toward accounts. The printing costs per page are $0.08 for black and white, and $0.40 for color. These are automatically deducted from the account as students print or photocopy. Add Value Stations are located at all MDC libraries and computer courtyards.

Photocopies can also be purchased through student accounts at $0.08 per page. When paying with cash, however, the cost is $0.10 per page. Photocopy machines accept change (no pennies), and $1, $2, and $5 bills. Remember that you can use your account to get the discounted 8-cent rate.

In her lecture, "Academic Libraries Tell Their Stories," she discussed the North Campus Library's outreach programs:
